What You Need to Know to Purchase a FirearmTo purchase a long gun or rifle you must:
Be a California Resident
Have a California Real ID*
Posses a current FSC (Firearm Safety Certificate)**
To purchase a handgun you must:
Be a California Resident
Have a California Real ID*
Posses a current FSC (Firearm Safety Certificate)**
Have proof of California Residency (Only one is required)
– Vehicle Registration
– PG&E Bill or SMUD Bill
– Property Tax (not tied to a trust)
– Cable Bill
– Lease Agreement
* If the address on the ID doesn’t match we need two proofs of residency. Current and previous residency within 90 days of the last billing cycle.
** If you do not have a Firearm Safety Certificate we can Administer the test in house. The Certificate is valid for five years.
If you do not have a Real California ID you need:
Your previous California ID and only one additional proof of residency which can be:
– Your Passport
– Birth Certificate
– Resident Alien Card

Handguns Certified for Sale in California
The Department of Justice has a California approved roster list of handguns. You can search the list of Handguns Certified for Sale on the Office of the Attorney General website.
